Space Can presents “Smellscape,” a solo exhibition by artist Kim Jeesoo(b. 1977), on view through January 20. The artist remembers the smell of books in her father’s study as a child, and it opens her eyes to see everything around her in a new way. In this exhibition, the artist transforms the entire exhibition space into a smellscape with odor molecules flowing through it, triggered by the memory of the smells she experienced.
Olfactory experiences transport the body and mind from the present to a specific place or memory in the past, activating the senses and processes of relationships that were previously unnoticed. Smell also connects the present to the future and allows us to explore how we will relate to our surroundings in the future. Kim calls this transcendental network and space-time created by connecting the past, present, and future through smell ‘Smellscape’.
The exhibition expresses the unique smells of everyday life as experienced and felt by the artist through poetic texts, paintings, installations, and drawings, constantly stimulating the olfactory imagination of the artist and visitors to produce rich meanings.
