Incheon Art Platform presents HYUN Seungeui’s solo exhibition “Maybe this will be the last” through January 21. The exhibition is by HYUN Seungi, the 14th artist-in-residence in the visual arts department of the Incheon Art Platform’s residency program.
During her residency at Incheon Art Platform in 2023, the artist expressed discourse through his exploration of the sea in her works. Paying particular attention to the recent issues related to the waterproofing of Fukushima-contaminated water, which has become a major social issue, the artist sought to capture the subtle social atmosphere. The artist arranges images of the sea collected during his visits to Incheon’s tidal flats, fish markets, seaside amusement parks, and dockside museums, as well as memes from the news and social media, on a single screen.
The exhibition reflects the current zeitgeist that straddles the line between anxiety and comfort. The artist has felt helpless, along with many others, in the face of realities that are beyond her control, such as social phenomena and behaviors that occur on a national level, where it is unclear what to doubt and what to believe. The title of the exhibition, ‘Maybe this is the last time’, refers to the anxiety of a dark future that is slowly approaching, a complacent gaze at a tragedy that cannot be felt immediately, and a childish imagination of the catastrophe that will result from it.
HYUN Seungeui (b.1991) graduated from the Department of Oriental Painting at Seoul National University. She has been dealing with the relationship between humans and nature, the world regulated by capital, and the huge social system in which various phenomena occur, cynically unraveling the various discourses inherent in space.
