Gallery Baton is pleased to present Towards, a solo exhibition by artist Kim Bohie (b.1952), from May 30 to July 1. While her solo exhibition at Kumho Museum of Art in 2020 and her solo exhibition at Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art in 2022 consisted of major works that showcased the artist’s entire oeuvre, this exhibition presents new works that focus on the intimate and peaceful landscapes that the artist sees through her warm gaze in everyday life.
Through her figurative landscape paintings, Kim has been exploring the contemporary expansion of Oriental painting with a unique technique that she has developed and matured in the process of deeply analyzing the traditional styles of Eastern and Western painting. In the early stages of her career, she experimented with a variety of colored ink techniques within the realm of Oriental painting, capturing the features of the surrounding figures and still lifes with a restrained and contemplative gaze. Later, she began to actively incorporate coloristic techniques and establish her pictorial landscape painting through the Sansu style.
Leo, the artist’s pet black Labrador retriever, takes center stage in the exhibition. The works have their own individual narrative structure, but at the same time, they share a landscape that serves as a backdrop and leads to each other. The works are similar to the traditional compositions of Sansu Byeongpung, and while the restrained yet colorful use of color and canvas ensures their modernity, they also extend the formal boundaries of the artist’s landscape paintings.
