From August 31 to October 27, Barakat Contemporary will present Of Hundred Carts and On, a solo exhibition by artist Jewyo Rhii (b. 1971). With this exhibition, Barakat Contemporary relocates to the main building at Barakat Seoul in Sogyeok-dong (58-4 Samcheong–ro, Jongno–gu).

Jewyo Rhii has been creating works that can be combined with the environment, utilizing temporary and variable materials. This exhibition centers on the series < Love Your Depot > (2019-), which the artist has been experimenting with since its first unveiling at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea’s 2019 Korea Artist Prize. This work, a kind of open storage system, stores works that are marginalized from the mainstream art market, such as works that are difficult to store after an exhibition, or works that have not been exhibited, without being collected and stored in a museum or gallery. The works stored in < Love Your Depot > in this exhibition extend beyond the artist’s own work to include works by fellow artists. In the series, < Painting Plate > (2023), which is designed to improve the efficiency of viewing flat works, and < Turn Depot > (2021-2023), which shows all four sides of works in a slow rotation, show a new relationship between the works.

The artist has said that a gallery is the destination for < Love Your Depot >. In this exhibition, Rhii’s first solo exhibition in 10 years, viewers can follow the artist’s trajectory.
