Space Willing N Dealing presents the first
part of Kim Jiye's solo exhibition, "Swaying Cloth, Trembling Bones,"
through September 15. The exhibition features 10 new ceramic works in the form
of relief and rundplastik.
The artist has been working with everyday
clothing that has been dipped in slip, hardened, and baked. Unlike conventional
ceramic works in which forms molded from clay are fired to create a solid form,
Kim utilizes clay and fire as a way to make objects disappear from existence.
This is a process in which the original
garment itself is destroyed through the properties of fire, and only traces or
marks of its existence are left behind through the medium of soil. The artist
also borrows sculptural forms such as relief and rundplastik. The work in the
form of an illusion suspended from the ceiling originated from a sculptural
work in which various objects collected by the artist, such as cloth, paper,
dried plants, and coconut fibers, were stacked on top of each other.
While they are fired in the kiln, the
original skeletonized objects disappear, and the thin porcelain part left
behind collapses, unable to support the weight of the entire object, and
becomes a new sculpture created by chance.
Prior to this exhibition, Kim used to
create tactile objects with soft, smooth, and fragile surfaces. In recent
exhibitions, she has also presented sculptures in the form of thin, fragile
ceramics that are held together by support on hard metal (stainless steel).
Following this solo exhibition at Space
Willing N Dealing, the second part of the exhibition will be held at OSISUN in
December 2024. In the second part, the stainless steel sections that used to
serve as supports will be shown in combination with other materials, such as
cloth and metal, as well as on their own, to explore another sculptural message
that emerges from these forms.
