Finally When You and I Meet, a solo exhibition by artist Lee Sejun, who combines figuration and abstraction in a single painting, will be on view at Space Willing N Dealing from April 15 to May 14.
The exhibition will feature ‘Anti plot_Space Arcade’, a series of 13 paintings that look like a single scene. This work was conceived by imagining an old shopping street that might exist somewhere in the galaxy. This work is a large-scale painting installation of six rhombus-shaped canvases sandwiched between seven landscapes depicting different scenes from 2018 to 2020. It makes the gallery space look like a giant mural structure.
His work is a mix of abstract and figurative, but when he creates a work, he decides whether he wants to use figurative or abstract as the form of the main and then mixes the two materials a little bit. For example, in his figurative works, he enlarges and uses thing like walls, painting marks, wooden boards, and steel as materials. And he also used figurative materials, such as glass, birds, and still life, in abstract form by arranging them into elements in an allegory.
These materials are inspired by episodes that he heard from his acquaintances during his work, thoughts that came to his at the moment, or objects around him, and he expresses them in his own form. They are unimportant, and even if you know their contents, you can stop knowing them. However, the artist hopes that the viewers will be able to find the meaning through the materials if they wish and that it will be a starting point for other imaginations.
*During this exhibition, Lee will be exhibiting Meta Fiction at Space Hwangumhyang (B101/13 Seooreung-ro 8-gil, Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, B101). The exhibition presents a new installation format consisting of older works.
