“Phantom Sense,” a group exhibition of artists who work with the idea that “sight is secondary” through various senses such as taste, touch, and smell, beyond sight, which has been considered the most important in visual art, is currently on display in Seoul.

The exhibition features seven Korean and international artists and runs through June 28 at Platform-L Contemporary Art Center. This exhibition occupies the entire building, including the galleries, annex, and machine room.

Gallery 2 features installation artist Sijae Jang’s massive new work made from industrial materials, flanked by works by Rémi Klemensiewicz, who uses sound equipment to represent linguistic symbols. Gallery 3 features works by Ko Hui and Sungseok Ahn. Ko Hui’s work, which consists of eight speakers and three structures, overlaps space and construction with sound in a virtual space. Sungseok Ahn’s work is rooted in the world of online gaming, and his installation utilizes technological hardware to simulate racing wheels and motion gears.

Exit the gallery and enter Annex 3, where Inhwa Yeom’s Imposter Kitchen, 2022 is featured. The work depicts a fictional XR fine dining restaurant where monkeys dressed as nurses serve guests. Next, in Annex 2, Hoonida Kim’s Stone for Decoding #01, 2021 is on display. In this space, objects are perceived and reinterpreted anew in a familiar environment, and active perception of matter is possible.

Finally, the Machine Room on the third floor of the basement was created by Sunghwan Ahn. His new work Sweet!, 2023 is a tube that emits fragrance and is large enough to fill the machine room. It raises serious questions about human existence through interaction with the audience.

The exhibition crosses the boundary between virtuality and reality, inviting visitors to experience new and unexpected possibilities. Visitors can experience the world in a new way through works that express various senses in various formats beyond sight.
