Gwon Do-yeon (b. 1980)’s solo exhibition Twinkle will be held at Perigee Gallery from October 6 to November 25.
Gwon has been photographing wild dogs and other wildlife by following them and photographing them in his series ‘Bukhansan’ and ‘Nocturama’. The artist captures his subjects in the form of black-and-white-documentary photographs in the dark hours of the night when only artificial light such as camera flashes and streetlights exist.
In this exhibition, the ‘Twinkle’ series features a variety of animals, including raccoons, water deer, and otters. The photographs were taken while traveling to and from Haengju Bridge, Nanji Bridge, Jeonho Bridge, and Gayang Bridge. The artist found a circular green area near the bridges where wildlife gathered. Then he spent a long time meeting, observing, and photographing animals going in and out of the green area. The process of photographing animals and their surroundings is not just a process of documentation, but a process of resolving tension between animals and the artist as they face each other.
