The Arko Art Center on Daehak-ro will host the thematic exhibition “Memory-Space” from April 14 to July 23. This exhibition is planned to give visitors a new experience of the museum as it approaches its 50th anniversary.
The museum was designed by Kim Swoogeun, the first generation of modern architects, after Seoul National University moved to Gwanak, on the site of the former Keijo Imperial University and Seoul National University College of Liberal Arts. Located within Marronnier park on Daehak-ro, a former site of the democracy movement and a symbol of youth culture, it has supported various generations of artists.
The exhibition centers on memories of the Arko Art Center and the park where it is located, which have been important influences on contemporary art. Through the eyes of contemporary artists, it attempts to create an artistic record that deals with personal and social memories formed through the medium of space.
A total of nine artists (teams) from Korea and abroad will participate, presenting 23 paintings, sculptures, and video sound installations that capture the various narratives of the museum. In addition to the exhibition halls, archive lounge, and project space, the works can be found in places outside of the traditional exhibition space, such as the outdoor lobby, passageways, and stairwell restrooms. This works installed in these spaces have been created and installed specifically to fit the characteristics of the space.
