GANA ART NINE ONE in Hannam-dong will present Une Rose, a solo exhibition by artist Yeesookyung (b. 1963), from April 20 to May 21. This exhibition will focus on the artist’s new painting series, ‘Oh! Rose,’ which she began in 2022 with the theme of roses.

‘Oh, Rose!’ is a series of paintings that focuses on roses, which were only in the background in her previous series, ‘Past Life Regression Painting,’ and is characterized by roses that are small in size but fill the canvas and abstract backgrounds such as the aurora borealis. For the artist, the rose is a motif that leads to a world of the unconscious, free from the constraints of time and space, where unpredictability and free narrative are possible. The beautifully blooming roses in the mysterious scene of the aurora borealis are located on the border of abstract and figurative, conscious and unconscious, past life and this life.

Lee made a name for herself in the international art world with her ‘Translated Vase’ series, which is made of broken ceramic shards glued together with gold leaf. Lee has continued to work in an experimental manner, incorporating disparate elements borrowed from various religions and cultures into her works, including painting, installation, video, drawing, and performance, as well as sculpture.

In recognition of her experimental approach, she participated as an invited artist in the main exhibition of the 57th Venice Biennale and has exhibited at many prestigious institutions around the world, including the Gwangju Biennale, Liverpool Biennale, Capodimonte Museum in Italy, Asia Society Texas Center in the United States, and Atelier Hermès in South Korea. Her work is also held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the British Museum, and the MMCA, among others.
