Kukje Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Anish Kapoor (b. 1954) from August 30 to October 22.
Anish Kapoor has been exploring and experimenting with the properties of materials such as stainless steel and paint to create works that enable sensory experiences. In Korea, the artist is known for his two works < Tall Tree & the Eye > (2011) and < Sky Mirror > (2012), which were installed in the outdoor space of LEEUM Museum.
In this solo exhibition, Anish Kapoor’s entire body of work, including sculptures, paintings, and a series of black works, will be displayed in spaces K1, K2, and K3. In K3. viewers can see four massive sculptures. The simple, harshly colored sculptures in black and red are attached to the wall, but they protrude forward and overwhelm the viewer. In K2, paintings fill the walls of the room. Blood-red lumps of paint cover the canvas irregularly, giving them a three-dimensional feel, like relief. The outer space of K1 features small-scale gouaches that suggest doors or windows, while the inner space features a series of black works that use Kapoor’s signature black. Kapoor’s blackness, which absorbs almost all light, creates a sense of extreme calm, but also a sense of anxiety, like being swallowed up.
These works create an intense viewing experience through the red, black, and other colors that surround them, as well as their formation that recall the shapes of viscera.
