Pace Gallery Seoul presents “Cosmic Sensibility,” a solo exhibition by Kohei Nawa (b. 1975), through January 20. This exhibition is the artist’s first solo exhibition at Pace Seoul. It will feature more than 40 paintings, sculptures, and installations, including the “Spark” series, which will be shown for the first time.

The concept of the exhibition is to examine how individual lives are intertwined within the fabric of the vast universe. It also demonstrates Nawa’s long-standing interest in the cognitive, sensory, and phenomenological possibilities of art as the artist’s deep reflection.

The five series of works in the exhibition present diverse perspectives on visual distortion and paradox. On the first floor of the exhibition, the installation < Biomatrix(W) >(2023) is featured alongside new works from the artist’s major series ‘PixCell.’ On the second floor, the world of proliferating cells unfolds and appears before the viewer’s eyes through the ‘PixCell’ series. The new works in the ‘PixCell’ series feature random combinations of creatures and objects.

The ‘Spark’ series, which is being presented for the first time in the exhibition, can be found on the third floor. The works have strong, mysterious shapes in black and are made of velvet and carbon fiber rods, respectively. Through these works, the artist explores the cracks in the status quo created by the energy released by the movement of cells. The hypnotic ‘Rhythm’ series, echoes the aesthetic concerns of the ‘PixCell’ sculptures and explores the cyclical and active complexity of nature.

Kohei Nawa (b. 1975) is a multidisciplinary sculptor who explores the relationship between the natural and the artificial, the individual and the whole. The artist presents a distinctive, multifaceted body of work built on a diverse range of practices. Organic forms with partially complex structures, such as cells, are transformed into artificially stylized sculptures.
