Artside Gallery presents a solo exhibition “Time Sleep” by Kim Xian (b. 1992) through July 6. After studying abroad in China for many years, Kim noticed that most people look at artifacts with aspirations or meanings and try to understand and interpret the hidden meanings by themselves.
Based on digital tools, Kim has created all the textures of creatures and objects like plastic and ceramics, deconstructing their existing meanings and revealing them in simple and honest forms. The resulting shapes are made of thick, rough materials and airbrushed smooth textures to maximize the contrast of visual effects, creating a flat, three-dimensional appearance.
This exhibition which is ‘a story that happened in a museum,’ captures the moment when the still life objects that existed as artifacts move freely and create situations when everyone is asleep. If Kim has shown the space in the works as a utopia in a state of ‘nothingness,’ the artist aims to build a space where the still life artifacts can move independently, avoiding the outside gaze.
This allows the viewer to imagine the secret and mysterious stories of the objects. “Time Sleep,” a solo exhibition of Kim’s witty works, presents her expanded oeuvre with still lifes and playfully realized situations that appear in unexpected places.
