Frieze and the Getty have announced collaborations leading up to PST ART: “Art & Science Collide” in September 2024. PST ART, previously known as Pacific Standard Time, is a major arts program that occurs every six years across museums and art institutions in Southern California.
The first collaboration, supported by Getty grants, will coincide with the 2023 editions of Frieze Seoul and Frieze London. In Seoul, the Korean visual research collective ikkibawiKrrr will present a new video and interactive performance, expanding on their previous work Seaweed Story (2022), which explores the haenyeo (sea women) community of female divers on Jeju Island, South Korea.
Their work delves into the haenyeo’s relationship with the marine ecosystem, highlighting their sustainable harvesting of seaweed and seafood. Additionally, they will perform Flavors of the Sea (2023) at the event. In London, Los-Angeles-based artist Candice Lin will create large-scale indigo-dyed kites for display at Frieze London. These kites, shaped like traditional Korean fighting kites, will allude to the practice of castration.
These collaborations between Frieze and the Getty are part of the larger PST ART initiative, showcasing the intersection of art and science, and will offer unique artistic experiences in both Seoul and London.
