《Oksoon’s Thread》 is an exhibition that presents the life and labor of Choi Oksoon, the maternal grandmother of artist Hee Vaak.

In this exhibition, an installation work made with silk thread braided by the hands of Oksoon’s daughter and granddaughter, as well as a documentary recording Oksoon’s life, are presented. The artist’s work began when she happened to learn that her grandmother had two names, “Oksoon” and “Chunja,” and began recording the small and countless stories her grandmother uttered.

The artist often sews, attaching this and that together. Because of this, she thinks that tastes or interests may not be something one creates entirely on one’s own, but rather things inherited through the emotions, techniques, and habits of previous generations.

In this way, the labor of “sewing,” which her grandmother began in order to make a living, is passed down to the artist, the granddaughter, as the labor of “art-making” to continue her own livelihood.

The process of trimming and stitching the silk thread left behind by Oksoon, following Oksoon’s way of laboring, is a work of remembering the maternal grandmother who was Chunja and Oksoon, and of wishing for the well-being of a generation that has passed.
