In 2022, the Daejeon Museum of Art explored the overarching theme of the “city,” revisiting both the tangible and intangible values that shape urban life. Within cities that have grown and evolved under the banner of a “better future,” hope and despair, virtue and vice, wealth and poverty coexist—revealing that the challenges facing humanity persist under different names.

Following the Cold War era, humanity has continuously sought to build harmony and prosperity. In particular, since the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Korea has pursued a “better future” through internationalization, globalization, and cross-border exchanges in politics, economics, and culture. Yet, despite these aspirations, the dream remains incomplete as humanity now confronts new crises while searching for opportunities beyond the future itself.

The exhibition 《We must run WWW》 centers on works from the Daejeon Museum of Art Collection, reflecting on humanity’s relentless desire to enter a new world and proposing artistic reflections on a sustainable future. It serves as both a portrait of the contemporary era—where vast opportunities and crises coexist—and a tribute and encouragement to humankind’s perseverance in striving toward a brighter tomorrow.

Featuring six contemporary artists whose works address the political, social, and media issues of our time—such as capital, power, and technology—the exhibition portrays the city’s fragments as it continually pursues progress and challenge toward a better future. Beyond offering visual concepts, these works invite viewers to share new aesthetic experiences and consider multidimensional strategies for confronting humanity’s uncertain tomorrow.

Located in the historic Daejeon Creation Center, the exhibition takes place in a district that once served as the original heart of Daejeon’s urban development. By situating itself within this geographical and cultural context, 《We must run WWW》 envisions how the “old center” of the city—pushed aside by modernization—might once again emerge as a vital core of a new international metropolis. In this sense, the exhibition itself becomes both a message and an act of artistic practice, embodying a declaration for renewal, coexistence, and forward motion.
