Photographer Noh Suntag (42) has been selected as the winner of the 11th DongGang Photography Award in 2012.

The DongGang Photography Village Operating Committee, chaired by Kim Youngsoo, announced on the 6th that after deliberation among five photography experts, Noh was chosen as the final recipient for his unique perspective and for his continued photographic engagement with issues such as the division of the Korean Peninsula.

Noh views war on the Korean Peninsula as both an old memory and an ongoing reality, and regards division not as a static past but as a living and pulsating present. Through his practice, he has collected and visualized scenes that simultaneously expose and conceal the landscapes of such conflicts.

He has held numerous solo exhibitions in Korea and abroad, including Fragrance of Division, the strAnge ball, The Red Frame, State of Emergency, and A Fine Killing, and has published photobooks under the same titles.

In particular, his photobook State of Emergency, published by Hatje Cantz Verlag in Germany, won the Silver Prize at the 2009 German Photo Book Awards.

The award ceremony will take place on July 20 at the opening ceremony of the 11th DongGang International Photo Festival in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province, where Noh will receive a prize of 10 million KRW, and his works will be exhibited in the Third Exhibition Hall of the DongGang Museum of Photography during the festival.

Since its inception in 2002, when photographer Choi Kwangho received the first award, the DongGang Photography Award has been presented annually to a photographer recognized for their significant contributions and consistent excellence in the field. With recipients such as last year’s winner Oh Hyungkeun, the award has solidified its reputation as one of the most prestigious honors in Korean photography.
