The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art(MMCA) announced on the 11th that photographer Noh Suntag has been selected as the recipient of the Korea Artist Prize.

The judging panel stated that Noh was chosen because "he explores social and political issues while contemplating the essence of the camera and the meaning of existence as a photographer. His work demonstrates a high level of accomplishment and a remarkable sense of humor that challenges our perceptions even amid the intensity of real events."

Noh Suntag, the first photographer ever to be shortlisted and ultimately awarded the MMCA’s Korea Artist Prize, is currently presenting his new work, The Young Snake of an Inept Landscape, along with hundreds of his previous photographs capturing key sites of Korea’s contemporary history—such as Daechuri in Pyeongtaek and the Jeju naval base—at the exhibition Korea Artist Prize 2014, which opened on August 5 at the MMCA Gwacheon branch.

The Korea Artist Prize is co-organized by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the SBS Foundation for Culture, with the aim of supporting artists with the potential to represent contemporary Korean art. The winner is also given the opportunity to have a documentary produced about their artistic practice.
