Hoard Gallery will present Jinah Roh's solo exhibition 《Burdensome Skin》 from September 3 to October 5.

In the gallery, a massive AI robot named Themis awaits visitors. As visitors approach, Themis opens its large eyes and follows their movements. This work, titled Themis, Abandoned AI, is a new media sculpture by artist Jinah Roh.

Themis, in Greek mythology, is the goddess of justice, identified with the Roman goddess Justitia. In Roh's work, Themis represents an AI robot that has undergone extensive learning to judge human affairs, striving to become human-like and learning human emotions. However, the robot ultimately becomes incapable of making fair judgments due to its newly acquired human-like emotional involvement. Through this narrative, the work explores the concept of co-evolution between humans and machines, as well as the inherent limitations of artificial intelligence.

Visitors engage in philosophical conversations with the giant robot, discussing humanity, machines, and life itself. Throughout this interaction, they develop a curious sense of pity for the robot, who longs to become human and earnestly seeks to learn human emotions.
