Using the universally accessible motif of the “star,” Starya Hee-seung Sung conveys messages of hope, comfort, and recovery. Known as the “star artist,” she creates abstract works in which layers of triangles composed of points and lines extend infinitely across the pictorial surface. Connections from point to point and line to line signify that “I,” “you,” and “we” are interconnected as beings within the world.

At the same time, the egalitarian pictorial field—with no beginning or end, no center or periphery, and therefore no hierarchy—dissolves the boundary between human and nonhuman, suggesting that all forms of life exist as equals within the universe.

Guided by starlight, the artist seeks to express our inner minds through painting, imagining a process in which sharing one’s feelings can heal wounds, distribute pain, and offer comfort to one another. For Sung, this is a connection from heart to heart, one that must ultimately be realized as the “power of solidarity.”
