The Gwangju Museum of Art is holding a special exhibition titled 《Serve the God, with the People: From the Eastern Learning to the May 18th》, in commemoration of the 130th anniversary of the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the 44th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement.

The exhibition aims to shed new light on Donghak—a political movement that escalated into a war—from the perspective of spiritual culture. It also seeks to establish Donghak as the foundation of the May Spirit that emerged from the Gwangju Democratization Movement, ultimately presenting it as a universal value for future societies.

Revisiting a historical event from 130 years ago does more than just pay tribute to their dedication; it brings the spiritual legacy of the past into present and future discourse. The spirit of our times, grappling with the climate crisis and other consequences of materialism, is shifting away from anthropocentrism to embrace a vision of peace for all life.

The goal of the exhibition is clear: to reexamine the teachings of Donghak, which promote respect for the heavens, people, and life in all its forms, and to reflect on the life philosophy and community spirit evinced in the great struggles of Korean history, from the Donghak Revolution to the May 18 Demoratization Movement.
