The Busan Biennale Organizing Committee (Chairperson: Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon) announces the theme of the 2022 Busan Biennale as 《We, on the Rising Wave》. Running for 65 days from September 3 to November 6, 2022, the Biennale will make use of Yeongdo, Jungang-dong, and other areas of the old downtown in addition to the Busan Museum of Modern Art, in line with the exhibition theme and overarching direction.

The finalized theme 《We, on the Rising Wave》 uses “waves” to signify the people who have flowed into and out of Busan over long stretches of time and the undulating histories they have carried, as well as to evoke Busan’s interconnection with the world. The wave also metaphorically reflects the spread of technological environments that dominate our lives, while suggesting Busan’s hilly, coastal topography. “We, on the Rising Wave” reveals how individual bodies are tightly entangled with this terrain and history, and imagines a vantage point from which to survey the future while standing upon shifting ground.

This edition revisits stories inscribed in—and concealed by—the transformations in Busan’s history and urban fabric since the modern era, and, following the 2020 Busan Biennale, views the globally fractured reality from the starting point of Busan. Focusing on migration, labor and women, urban ecologies, technological change, and spatiality, the exhibition references specific incidents and situations in Busan while also examining related narratives from other regions.

Exhibition Director Kim Hae-joo notes: “Through structures in which back-alley stories in Busan are connected, intersected, and repeated with those of global metropolises, we aim to propose new ways of seeing the world to people living different lives today, and to seek ways for us—who are different from one another—to stand firm upon the waves and live together amid changing environments.”
