《MMCA Residency Changdong Report 2022: Kim Holely Chen》 hosts a self-titled exhibition. Kim Holely Chen is an unusual name with two misplaced surnames that can’t be traced back to a specific nationality. Who is this person? The act of calling a name amounts to summoning that person to the here and now. Residency Changdong presents a fictional representation of the artists who took part in the program throughout the year.

Every year, the residency welcomes artists from perse backgrounds. With residencies lasting from 3 months to 1 year, artists with their own distinct personalities meet and introduce themselves on the outskirts of Seoul. Unaware of each other’s backgrounds, they reside in the same building and quickly become acquainted in a short amount of time.

However, the residency functions more like a station, where people arrive only to depart. During their brief time at the station, visitors accept that they can never fully understand one another, preferring to remain perpetual outsiders. Such a brief residency does not permit a thorough understanding of each artist’s distinct and unique identity. Thus, they part ways and leave each other in the realm of the unknown.

This year’s residency report focuses on the temporal nature of the program. All of the artists, strangers with little in common, are grouped together fictionally in one artist’s solo exhibition. If the purpose of an exhibition is to examine current issues under one context , how might artists showcase their distinctive identities in a “residency exhibition” with no single theme? This project begins by visualizing the outcome of an exhibition that brings together multiple artists under a single proper name “Kim Holely Chen.”

《MMCA Residency Changdong Report 2022: Kim Holely Chen》 explores how the resident artists who, having left their homes and moved into an unfamiliar place, apply methods of identification to create works of art about themselves. In short, this exhibition emphasizes how each person reveals themselves as an artist by embracing the limitations of a residency exhibition that cannot tie multiple works of art together under a united theme. Viewers are invited to discover Kim Holely Chen’s work in a single space where several perse contexts converge.
