Willing N Dealing presents 《Pine Tree》, a solo exhibition by Son Donghyun, his first in three years since 2011, featuring new works that explore contemporary popular culture through the techniques of traditional East Asian painting. In the history of East Asian painting, the pine tree—frequently depicted—has often appeared as a mediating element of various meanings and symbolic systems within the composition of a broader landscape.

In this exhibition, the artist turns the “pine tree,” or the “image of the pine tree” itself, into the subject of portraiture. In order to give a body and clothing to what he envisions as either “a pine tree as a persona” or “a figure in the form of a pine tree,” he references character-design methods commonly found in adventure, martial arts, and superhero comics. These conceptually constructed pine trees are then rendered through traditional painting techniques, ultimately forming the exhibition space.
