The Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. (Director Kim Jung-hoon, hereafter referred to as the Cultural Center) will hold the exhibition 《Landscape of the Mind》 featuring two Korean artists, Hyunjeong Lim and Seokhee Jung, from July 21 (Fri) to September 8 (Fri) in the gallery on the second floor of the Cultural Center.

The exhibition presents around twenty paintings and video works by the two artists, who each realize worlds of deep contemplation and imagination with distinctive sensibilities. The artists share a common theme that moves freely across the boundaries between everyday life and dreams, as well as reality and imagination, presenting their works like maps of landscapes within the mind.

By observing the artists’ inner landscapes realized through various painterly experiments, viewers are invited to reflect their own stories onto the works, fostering empathy and offering an opportunity to move beyond everyday thinking and develop new and intriguing imaginings.

Artist Hyunjeong Lim renders images derived from personal memories and experiences on canvas in a lively manner following the flow of the unconscious. Currently based in Seattle, Lim often uses experiences from visits to national parks in the American West during the COVID-19 pandemic as key subjects in her recent works. Against the backdrop of vast natural landscapes, she freely combines figures and objects emerging from her inner imagination, creating surreal pictorial scenes.

Artist Seokhee Jung creates video works that reconstruct narratives derived from fundamental reflections on human life through fictional imagination. The artist produces multiple scenes using oil paint or charcoal, photographs them, and then reconstructs them into video. Even the delicate brushstrokes and traces of revisions from the painting process remain visible within the final video. Through the distinctive genre of “video painting,” Jung presents works that differ from animation, emphasizing painterly qualities more clearly.

Alongside the exhibition, the Cultural Center will also participate in the local monthly cultural event “Art Walk Dupont.” This event involves collaboration with various cultural institutions in Washington, D.C., featuring nighttime gallery openings and related programs. During the exhibition period, the gallery will be open for evening viewing on two occasions (August 4 and September 1) from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The exhibition at the Cultural Center is free of charge and open to the public without reservation. Regular visiting hours are Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (excluding lunch break from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM).
