The contemporary artist Yeondoo Jung is currently participating in a group exhibition titled 《Compulsion to Repeat》 at Seoul Museum of Art, Korea. Featuring a roster of nine contemporary artists including Yeondoo Jung, Yongkwan Kim, Jeamin Cha, New Mineral Collective, Emilija Škarnulytė, and Omer Fast, this exhibition explores how compulsion operates within the complexity of the capitalist system and its emancipatory potentials. As can be inferred from the title, Compulsion to Repeat highlights the repetitive trait of compulsion while pointing to the very repetitiveness as a potential of overcoming it.

Yeondoo Jung, whose work examines the border between reality and imagination through a diverse range of mediums including photography, video, and installation based on performance, introduces DMZ Theater Series – Dora Theater (2019) for this exhibition. Made in collaboration with the producer Surya, DMZ Theater Series – Dora Theater is one among a series of photographic installation works that capture the DMZ observatory from thirteen different regions from Ganghwa Island to Goseong, all taken in between winter of 2017 to spring of 2019. Each work from the series is based on a narrative specific to the location it was taken in.

Dora Observatory, which is the backdrop of Jung’s work currently on view in the exhibition, is at once a symbolic location that points to the history of division and the fruit of capitalist ideology, built as a unification and national security tour complex. Jung has overlapped a number of photographs in order to produce a single plane where reality and imagination coexist. DMZ Theater Series – Dora Theater repeats the compulsion to determine whether the era we live in is in "division or unification," in doing so imagining a non-existent third reality and revealing the collective unconscious. Featuring 45 works including video, sculpture, and image, this exhibition is on view through March 8, 2020.
