Lee Ungno Museum launched the Paris Lee Ungno Residency, a
research-based creative support program designed to provide local artists with
a stepping stone into the international art scene. Established in 2014, the
program selects three artists based in Daejeon each year and offers them a
three-month residency in France. All participants reside in Vaux-sur-Seine, a
suburb of Paris where the Goam Atelier is located, dedicating themselves to
artistic practice. It has been noted that through this experience, the artists
were able to take a significant step forward in their development.
The museum previously held a successful residency report
exhibition for artists from the 2014–2015 inaugural cohorts at Daejeon City
Hall. This time, it presents an exhibition at the main building of Lee Ungno
Museum featuring fifteen artists from five cohorts who participated between
2016 and 2022. The vision of the Paris Lee Ungno Residency is rooted in the
experimental spirit of Lee Ungno, who elevated his artistic practice to a new
level after traveling to Europe in 1958. Just as encounters with contemporary
art movements in Germany and France greatly expanded Lee Ungno’s creative
passion and artistic spectrum, the fifteen participating artists utilized
Paris’s rich artistic infrastructure and cultural environment to redefine their
own artistic worlds and strengthen their creative capacities.
During their three-month stay, the artists took part in various
activities including visits to major museums in France, exhibition viewings,
and seminars with French art professionals. They have presented new works
through “open studio” exhibitions that showcased the outcomes of their
residency. At these concluding events, numerous figures from the Paris art
scene attended, appreciating the works and offering high praise for the
artistic quality of the Daejeon artists and for the Paris Lee Ungno Residency project
itself. Through this program, both Lee Ungno Museum and the city of Daejeon
gained international recognition.

The fifteen artists participating in this report exhibition
translate their experiences of the natural environment of Vaux-sur-Seine and
exchanges within the Paris art world into diverse themes and media. The
exhibited works, inspired by Lee Ungno’s spirit of creation and
experimentation, actively engage with key concepts of contemporary art such as
time, desire, and memory.
This exhibition offers an opportunity to observe the growth of
local artists nurtured through the Paris Lee Ungno Residency over the past
several years, while also providing meaningful reflection on the future
direction of the program.
