The title of Eun-saem An and Eun-si Jo’s two-person exhibition 《Pincer Attack》 means “encirclement or flanking maneuver.” Like a pincer tool that grasps its object by applying pressure from both sides rather than holding it in place, their works tighten around a third subject from opposite directions.

That subject may be painting itself—abstraction or figuration, composition, perspective, or color theory—but perhaps none of these categories really matter. Ultimately, their works do not seize anything at all. They merely circle around it, hovering in its vicinity without closure.
