A-Lounge presents Son Hyunseon’s solo exhibition 《In the Middle of Oasis》 from November 5 to November 27, 2021. This exhibition marks the artist’s first solo show since 2017, showcasing new works that visualize elements Son has long been drawn to: light, mirrors, and fire. In her earlier works, the artist focused on objectifying the subject and translating it into an image grounded in conceptual thought. However, in her recent practice, Son turns her attention to her own body as the one who observes and draws the subject. Rather than capturing the subject as a static entity fixed on the canvas, she aims to seize the moment where the continuous flow of time, the observing body, and the object intersect.

Just as a can functions as an extension of vision for the visually impaired, the act of folding paper becomes, for Son Hyunseon, an experience of ‘seeing through touch.’ The artist collects and selects cutting patterns inspired by diamond cutting techniques, draws cutting lines, and carefully folds and unfolds along those lines to create surfaces and discover color. Another tool for seeing— the mirror —appears with an opaque surface that reflects nothing. The disconnection between the self who gazes into the mirror and the image of oneself that appears within it momentarily excludes the function of the eyes from the act of seeing.

Finally, the act of painting flickering flames leads the artist to confront the very moment of observing fire. Viewers follow the ascending flames through drawing and experience the moment simultaneously. Through the spectator’s gaze, the flames—as both the visible outcome of the artist’s observation and a subject in themselves—return to confront the viewer, prompting reflection on what remains at the intersection of sight and object.
