[Artist’s Note]

The sentence used as the exhibition title is an error message that appears on an internet browser when the time on a computer device is incorrectly set to either a distant past or a distant future. It means the time of the computer system does not match the internet time. While one could simply correct the error and restore the proper time, I couldn't pass by that sentence without pause, as it reminded me of someone who slips away from the present time to daydream about the past or the future. For the dreamer, this is a welcome error. Like a drop of ink falling into a colorless liquid and instantly spreading, the moment becomes completely drenched in memories and imagination.

In fact, not only for the dreamer but for everyone, the present is not simply the here and now, not merely a fleeting moment or exactly as seen. Between the past that has passed and the future that is approaching, we constantly pull memories and weave them in all directions, envisioning decisive moments. That is why what appears before our eyes is always different for everyone.

Just ahead, beside here, farther away, closer, within me, behind me, outward, and back into deeper places—the gaze drifts.

The surface remains flat, yet there is clearly a front and a back. Using the canvas as a boundary, the paint sometimes recedes to create an illusory space behind and sometimes gently emerges to reveal its materiality in the foreground. Thus, the surface is transparent and opaque at the same time.

Thinking of intersecting temporal spaces, such as "On the island where I arrived near the end of winter, summer was coming to an end," or "Behind the reflection of the daytime scenery in the mirror, I saw the landscape of the night," I gathered objects like scattered memories picked up along the street and arranged them together in this illusory space of simultaneity.

In the time adrift with the error left unresolved, I fish out images.

The phrase Your Clock is Behind / Your Clock is Ahead encapsulates various meanings within my work: the relationship between the ‘front’ and ‘back’ sides of a painting, how objects placed within the painting gain depth by being positioned ‘in front’ or ‘behind’ to construct an illusory space, the way such spatial composition is always entangled with temporality, and the process of developing the work with an unwavering goal toward a fairly rigidly predetermined future through 3D spatial simulation of the final result.
