Kim Eull studied metal craft at Wonkwang University and metal
design at Hongik University Graduate School. After working as a jewellery
designer, he shifted to painting in the mid-1980s and held his first solo
exhibition at Kumho Gallery in 1994. Following early painting series focused on
self-portraiture and family history, he has devoted his practice since the
early 2000s to drawing-based works. Working across painting, sculpture, and
installation, Kim continues to expand the conceptual and material possibilities
of contemporary drawing.

Painter Kim Eull has been named the winner of the ‘30th Lee Jung-seob
Art Prize’.
Kim Eull is known for challenging the conventional notion of ‘drawing,’
which has traditionally been regarded as a preliminary sketch or underdrawing.
Using materials such as clay, wood, dolls, and toys instead of pencils, Kim has
presented drawing works that depart from established practices.
The prize includes 10 million won in prize money and a trophy. The award
ceremony will be held on November 8 at 5 p.m. at the Chosun Ilbo Art Museum in
Gwanghwamun, Seoul. An exhibition marking the award will be held concurrently
and will run through November 18.
