The Artist © Suh Yongsun

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) announced on the 30th that painter Suh Yongsun (51), known for his depictions of urban crowds and series of historical paintings, has been selected as ‘Artist of the Year 2009’.

Suh first gained recognition through his pine tree painting series. Since the mid-1980s, through his historical painting and urban figure series, he has expressed the existential condition of individuals caught in the turbulence of history and the uneasy inner world of modern people living in expanding cities, using his distinctive visual language characterized by intense colors and flattened structures.

The MMCA explained the reason for the selection: “Suh Yongsun is an artist who has maintained concern for artistic sincerity rather than being swept along by trends. His artistic attitude—grounded in humanistic research and reflection on his themes—serves as a rare model today.”

Suh Yongsun’s 《Artist of the Year》 exhibition is scheduled to open in July of next year.

The MMCA’s Artist of the Year program has been held annually since 1995 to encourage artistic creativity and to present the trends of Korean contemporary art. The selection is made through recommendations and discussions among the entire curatorial staff.
