A three-volume book series, Talking About Today’s Artists (published by Hakgojae), in which critics introduce contemporary artists actively working in Korea, has been released.

The publication is the outcome of the “Critical Activation Project for Contemporary Visual Artists” promoted by the Arts Council Korea. Following The Horizon of Contemporary Korean Art (2009), in which twelve critics wrote about twelve artists, the project concludes with the release of these three volumes.

An editorial committee of five members, including Professor Youngna Kim of the Department of Archaeology and Art History at Seoul National University, selected forty-nine artists born after 1945, and twenty-three critics contributed essays on two to three artists each.

Selected artists include Ik-Joong Kang, Koo Bohnchang, Koo Jeong A, Kimsooja, Atta Kim, Kim Ho Deuk, Kibong Rhee, Lee Soo-kyung, Yeesookyung, Jheon SooCheon, Chung Hyun, Hong Seung-Hye, Gimhongsok, Yun-Hee Toh, Min Byung-hun, Bae Bien U, Ahn Kyuchul, Yoo Geun-Taek, and Yoon Dongchun, among others.

Professor Kim Young-na, chair of the editorial committee, explained, “They were chosen not because they represent Korean contemporary art, but because they effectively show its current condition from multiple perspectives. The committee only provided a basic writing guideline — to present the development of each artist’s practice from early work to the present and identify key elements within the context of Korean contemporary art — while leaving most decisions to the contributors so that diverse viewpoints could emerge.”

An English edition summarizing the contents is scheduled for publication around February–March. Each volume contains 370–400 pages and is priced at 35,000 won.
