Ten contemporary Korean artists will participate in the 4th Prague Biennale, to be held in Prague, Czech Republic, from June 14 to July 26.

Won-il Rhee (48), an independent curator active abroad, announced at a press conference on the 20th, “As one of roughly ten co-curators responsible for selecting artists for the main exhibition of this biennale, I have recently completed the selection of Korean artists,” adding, “We plan to exhibit a total of twenty works — two pieces each by ten Korean artists — on site.”

Participating artists include Ha Chong-hyun, known for his monochrome paintings; Kibong Rhee, who has produced the landscape series ‘Wet Psyche’; Jung Yeondoo, who creates staged photographs; Kim Kira, who makes installations and videos as well as paintings satirizing consumer society; Ham Kyungah, who produces flat works embroidered by North Korean laborers; and Gilwoo Lee, who pierces paper with burning incense to create unusual images, among others.

Also participating are Sungsic Moon, the youngest artist in the Korean Pavilion at the 2005 Venice Biennale; Kwangho Lee, known for hyperrealistic paintings; Bongho Ha, primarily active in commercial photography; and Kang Un, who began with cloud paintings and has recently pursued abstract ink-and-color works.

The biennale, organized in Prague by the international art magazine Flash Art, is an international exhibition that this year will present works by around 400 artists, focusing mainly on painting and photography.

Meanwhile, Won-il Rhee added, “I was appointed last November as a curator recommending Asian works to the cultural foundation of BSI, a Swiss financial institution established in 1873,” and noted, “This will allow us to actively introduce Korean artists in the foundation’s acquisitions and exhibitions.” The foundation’s acquisition budget this year is reportedly about 2 billion won.
