The Artist © Kim Tschoon Su

Kim Tschoon Su (39) has been selected as Korea’s representative artist for the São Paulo Biennial, regarded as one of the three major international biennials alongside the Venice Biennale and the Whitney Biennial.

Art critic Seo Seong-Rok, commissioned as the Korean commissioner by the Korean Fine Arts Association, announced on the 5th that Kim was chosen because his body of work aligns with the overall theme of the 23rd São Paulo Biennial—“The Dematerialization of Art”—which will be held from October 5 to December 8.

Kim Tschoon Su graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Seoul National University and completed his graduate studies there before pursuing painting at California State University and New York University in the United States. Since 1985, he has actively engaged in artistic practice, holding thirteen solo exhibitions through last year. In particular, he was invited to participate in the exhibition 《Reflux》 at the Nagoya Prefectural Museum of Art and the Nagoya City Art Museum in Japan last year, where his distinctive artistic vision received critical acclaim.

In 1994, he was awarded the Grand Prize at the Total Museum of Art Award Exhibition, further establishing recognition of his painterly potential within Korea.

Stylistically, his work is categorized within the monochrome tradition. Characterized by a dominant use of blue, his paintings imbue the pictorial surface with profound inner emotion. Through the integration of materiality, line, color, and performative gesture, his works unfold what can be described as a “meditative space.”

This autumn’s São Paulo Biennial is expected to feature prominent artists from approximately sixty countries. Breaking from its previous practice of inviting multiple artists per country, the organizers have decided that this year only one artist will be invited to represent each nation.
