The recipients of this year’s Seoknam Art Prize, now in its eleventh year, have been selected as painter Yoon Dongchun and Kimsooja.

Established to commemorate the 60th birthday of art critic LEE Kyungsung, the Seoknam Art Prize is awarded annually to one promising artist under the age of 35 who has held a solo exhibition during the year. This marks only the second time that two artists have been selected in the same year.

The award includes a prize of 1 million won as well as the opportunity to hold an exhibition.

The jury consisted of Il Lee, Oh Kwang-su, and Yoon Woo Hak.

A two-person exhibition featuring this year’s awardees, Yoon Dongchun and Kimsooja, will be held this February at the Korea Art Museum. Born in 1957, both artists represent a younger generation of emerging figures. After returning to Korea in 1988 from a two-year period of study abroad, Yoon Dongchun drew attention within the domestic art scene for his fresh and inventive installation works. Kimsooja, meanwhile, has been producing diverse collage works using fabric as her primary material.
