Exhibition view of 《Scaffolding》 ©Kumho Museum of Art

Kumho Museum of Art presents Part 2 of the exhibition 《2023 Kumho Young Artist》 from May 5 (Fri) to June 11 (Sun), 2023. On the second floor, artist Heejoon Lee’s solo exhibition 《Scaffolding》 will be held.

Heejoon Lee presents the architectural elements of proportion, balance, and color he discovered in the process of exploring the urban architectural space with his own abstract visual language. In this exhibition, Lee showcases his painting and sculpture that incorporate ‘scaffolding', a temporary external architectural structure used in the construction process, and his installation work that displays the actual exhibition space as a variable environment. The modern aesthetic space newly created by the materiality of painting and the conversion of senses invites the viewers to escape from the norm and have multifaceted experiences.

“I explore the limitations and possibilities of painting today, reflecting on its sustainability. Rather than presenting a completed space or architecture, this exhibition reveals a provisional and variable state that precedes completion. While my previous works often dealt with experiences of finished architectural spaces, the subjects in these new paintings focus on raw materials and auxiliary elements that make up architectural surfaces. By concentrating on the material state that holds the potential for transformation—before it is finalized—I aim to invite viewers into a space of narrative through abstract painting, and to continue the act of contemplation.”
