The Soorim Cultural Foundation announced on the 12th that Dongwan Kook, Inhye Seo, and Jangwoo You have been selected as the three shortlisted artists for SOORIM ART PRIZE 2022.

Now in its sixth edition, the SOORIM ART PRIZE was established to discover and support promising artists with the potential to develop diverse artistic practices. The Soorim Cultural Foundation supports the winning artist by acquiring one of their works for its collection and providing an opportunity to hold a solo exhibition the following year.

According to the foundation, shortlisted artists are selected through an open call, followed by a document review and a final presentation. This year, the selection focused on the concept of “the beauty of emptiness,” seeking practices that are not confined to a particular genre and that expand both artistic media and modes of thought. Three artists who have developed their own visual languages in response to contemporary phenomena and conditions were selected.

Since 2007, Dongwan Kook has explored the process of accessing the unconscious through records of dreams, expressing this inquiry across various media. In this exhibition, Kook returns explicitly to the subject of “dreams” for the first time in 11 years since the artist’s first solo exhibition, while examining the formal points of intersection revealed in works that have emerged through states of liminality.

Inhye Seo has continued to explore the notion of “becoming-woman,” focusing on the materiality and actions of objects that resonate both inside and outside the body while bringing invisible forms of women’s embodiment and labor to the fore. For the exhibition, Seo will attempt a new spatial composition through sigimsae—ornamental inflections rooted in the Korean word gomsakda, meaning to ferment or mature over time—and images of aged surfaces.

For this exhibition, Jangwoo You takes “the future” as a central keyword, examining “abstracted capital” as it operates within our lives and social structures and as it intersects with visions of innovation and the future. By exploring the possibility of representing the future as a temporal concept, You investigates how the value of “abstracted commodities” functions as a framework of perception that shapes individual emotions and actions.

The three shortlisted artists are scheduled to participate in the 《SOORIM ART PRIZE 2022 Finalist Exhibition》 in November. During the exhibition period, one artist will be selected as the final recipient of SOORIM ART PRIZE 2022.
