The “2018 SeMA Artists Guild” is part of the Seoul Museum of Art’s artist-support initiative launched in 2015. Now in its fourth edition, the SeMA Artists Guild was conceived with the goal of establishing an institutional platform through which artists could sustain their creative labor.

The “2018 SeMA Artists Guild” invited artist collectives whose activities cross the boundaries of artistic practice and created a new arena for communication in which the knowledge and experience generated through their artistic activities could be exchanged and shared. The event consists of a three-day program involving sales and other activities, followed by a four-week exhibition.

The project focuses on seven artist collectives that actively respond to recent changes in creative environments, treating each unit as a research institute and laboratory that connects particular forms of artistic content with concrete aspects of life. The subtitle “萬Lab”* reflects artists and modes of practice demonstrating expertise and proficiency not only in art but also in adjacent fields.

In order to sustain creative activity within contemporary society, these artist groups form collaborations and shifting alliances among people, media, and networks according to need, crossing between art and life. The project examines these movements that expand the scope of art through the formats of sharing, exchange, and promotion adopted by the Artists Guild.

The three-day event within the “2018 SeMA Artists Guild” introduces the activities of each artist collective and provides a setting in which these activities can be shared and exchanged as both tangible and intangible items. This is followed by a four-week exhibition through which visitors can experience the SeMA Artists Guild, along with artist talks introducing the activities of the participating collectives.

In this way, the project allows not only the exchange of items but also the sharing of artists’ knowledge and experience. It is hoped that the project will provide an opportunity to question the scope of artistic practice and consider, in a broader sense, how these artists’ activities might be experienced, shared, and disseminated.

*The subtitle derives from the Korean gaming term “man-level” (만렙, 滿Level), a compound of man (滿), meaning “full,” and “level,” referring to the point at which a character in an online game reaches the highest possible level. The term was recombined as “萬Lab” to correspond with the theme of the “2018 SeMA Artists Guild.” (Definition source: Urimalsaem, National Institute of Korean Language)
