Alternative Space Pool presents CHE Onejoon’s third solo exhibition, 《UNDERCOOLED》, from March 5 (Wed) to March 23 (Sun), 2008.

In exhibitions at DoArt Gallery and Brain Factory in 2006, CHE Onejoon photographed the transformations of places excluded from the city and society, including the Miari red-light district and subway construction sites, addressing the invisible social and political changes embedded in the disappearance of Seoul’s modern spaces.

This solo exhibition at Alternative Space Pool focuses on military facilities that have long occupied various places around us. Until now, these spaces have been understood within the context of the Cold War and the division of the Korean Peninsula, but the artist sees the present as a moment when these dormant spaces must begin to seek new identities.

The work examines how concepts inherent to military facilities, such as camouflage, fortification, and concealment, are constructed architecturally, while revealing through the artist’s perspective landscapes shaped and disguised by military functionality.

The landscape of Eunpyeong New Town, where military facilities that have remained dormant for many years are disappearing, foreshadows their eventual fate amid a desire for economic development that surpasses even the logic of national security. And the spaces that once sustained a tense sense of time somewhere in a place that was nowhere now wait to be given new identities.
