Launched in 2008, KT&G SKOPF is a support program run by KT&G Sangsangmadang to discover and foster promising young Korean photographers. Each year, a panel of experts selects three “Artists of the Year,” each of whom receives KRW 10 million in production funding as well as mentoring support.

At the end of the year, the artists present the results of their work to professionals in the arts and culture sector and the public through an open portfolio review, after which one artist is ultimately selected as the “Final Artist of the Year.”

The “Final Artist of the Year” receives approximately KRW 40 million in activity funding, the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition at the KT&G Sangsangmadang Hongdae Gallery, and additional opportunities to participate in exhibitions. KT&G Sangsangmadang’s SKOPF is one of Korea’s leading support programs for photographers and has supported artists including Noh Suntag, Oksun Kim, and Noh Gihun.

For the 13th KT&G SKOPF, Dongsin Seo, Junyong Cho, and Jinsub Cho were selected as the three “Artists of the Year” in June and received support for their artistic practices. The works they developed over the following six months were presented at an open portfolio review on December 3, 2022. Following the jury’s evaluation, Dongsin Seo, who presented Equation, was selected as the “Final Artist of the Year.”

In their jury statement, jury chair Oksun Kim and jury members Sung Eun Kim, Hyeyoung Shin, Jaegu Lee, and Jung Hyun stated, “Seo demonstrates exceptional skill in handling the photographic medium and its materiality, as well as a consistently compelling approach to the limitations and expansion of photography. The work also exhibits a high degree of completion.”

As the “Final Artist of the Year,” Dongsin Seo plans to pursue an active program of activities with the support of KT&G Sangsangmadang, including a solo exhibition in the first half of 2023 and the publication of a monograph.
