Internationally acclaimed Jeju-born contemporary artist Jane Jin Kaisen has been named a finalist for 《Korea Artist Prize 2024》, organized by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA).

MMCA announced that it had selected four sponsored artists for 《Korea Artist Prize 2024》, co-organized with the SBS Foundation: Hayoun Kwon, Yang Jung-uk, Jiyoung Yoon, and Jane Jin Kaisen.

Since 2012, MMCA has operated the Korea Artist Prize program in partnership with the SBS Foundation to “support, foster, and sponsor artists who can present new possibilities, visions, and alternatives for Korean contemporary art.”

The sponsored artists are effectively the award’s finalists. Each receives KRW 50 million in production support from the SBS Foundation to create new work. The final winner, or Korea Artist Prize recipient, is then selected through public workshops held during the exhibition period and a second round of judging. The winner receives an additional KRW 10 million in prize money.

Jane Jin Kaisen was born in Jeju and adopted to Denmark. Based in Denmark, she has since gradually expanded her practice to Korea and other parts of the world. In Jeju, she was introduced through venues including Artspace C and has continued to maintain close ties with the island.

MMCA praised Jane Jin Kaisen, stating, “Based on extensive research into Jeju’s history and cultural heritage, she has addressed issues including memory, migration, borders, and translation. Her moving-image works, which combine poetic language, performance, and documentary grammar, traverse private and public memory and initiate conversations around sociocultural and geopolitical conditions.”

In November of last year, Jane Jin Kaisen was unanimously selected as the 2023 Artist of the Year, receiving the Beckett Prize, awarded annually by Copenhagen Contemporary and the Beckett Foundation in Denmark.

Marie Laurberg, Artistic Director of Copenhagen Contemporary and a member of the 2023 Beckett Prize jury, commented, “In her work, she builds bridges between historical narratives of her native Korea and experiences of transnational adoption and racialization. The greatest appeal of Jane Jin Kaisen’s work lies in her sensitive approach to highly complex issues, which speaks to her strong artistic integrity.”

Meanwhile, the first-round jury for MMCA’s 《Korea Artist Prize 2024》 consisted of seven members: Charl Landvreugd, Head of Research and Curatorial Practice at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; Cosmin Costinas, Artistic Director of the 24th Biennale of Sydney; Ruba Katrib, Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs at MoMA PS1 in New York; Sung Eun Kim, former Director of Nam June Paik Art Center; Haeju Kim, Senior Curator at Singapore Art Museum; Sunghee Kim, Director of MMCA, serving ex officio; and curator Jooyeon Lee, also serving ex officio.

The final jury will consist of six members, excluding the curator in charge. Following the opening of the exhibition, they will select one winning artist through processes including conversations between the artists and jurors.

The exhibition will run from Friday, October 25 through Sunday, March 23, 2025, in Galleries 1 and 2 at MMCA Seoul. It will present newly conceived and proposed works alongside earlier works related to them, offering a comprehensive view of each artist’s practice. The public artist-juror conversations will be open to anyone through advance registration on the museum’s website. The final winner will be announced in February 2025.

Sunghee Kim, Director of MMCA, stated, “As Korea’s representative award program for introducing the strength of Korean contemporary art to the world, 《Korea Artist Prize 2024》 has selected four artists working across diverse media. This year’s exhibition will present in-depth investigations into each medium alongside each artist’s distinctive thematic concerns,” adding, “It will offer an opportunity to encounter in advance artists who will come to represent Korean art in the future.”
