AICA Denmark is the Danish section of AICA International, which was founded in 1950 to revive critical discourse that had been suppressed by fascism during World War II. The organization has presented its annual Art Criticism Awards since 1994.

The award was given for Kaisen’s Community of Parting, which was presented at the Korean Pavilion of the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019.

Community of Parting interprets the myth of Bari, the story of an abandoned daughter, as an archetype of the female diaspora produced through processes of modernization, reflecting on questions of separation and borders.

The work incorporates the stories of women who fled from punitive forces during the Jeju 4·3 Uprising, women who defected from North Korea to South Korea, and Koryo-saram women who were forcibly relocated to Kazakhstan under Soviet deportation policies.

Jane Jin Kaisen was born in Jeju in 1980 and first returned to her birthplace in 2001. Her artistic practice was introduced to audiences in Jeju through an invitational exhibition at Artspace C in 2013. This October, she is scheduled to present a new installation, The Pull of the Moon, at Artspace C.
