Installation view of 《Making Film : PORN》 © Makeshop Art Space

From March 10 to April 8, Makeshop Art Space presents Insane Park’s solo exhibition 《Making Film : PORN》. The exhibition is the second in a series of solo exhibitions by artists from the fifth cohort of ‘STUDIO M17,’ the residency program operated by Makeshop Art Space.

Park has developed his work through metaphorical play, dismantling, altering, and recombining images primarily collected from the web. In preparing for this exhibition, he reflects on the media that have long held his interest and reconsiders what initially drew his attention to them.

As suggested by the title 《Making Film : PORN》, things that would normally unfold only within dark and clandestine private spaces are laid bare beneath the bright lights of the exhibition space, leaving viewers embarrassed and unsettled, much like a child’s first encounter with pornography.

This evokes parallels with the production and consumption of contemporary mass media, packaged in provocative videos, images, and language, while exposing our own consumption habits: having grown accustomed and desensitized to such stimuli, we continually turn toward content that is even more shocking and sensational.

While Park’s previous work has often led him to be regarded as a decadent artist pursuing intensely sensory and provocative forms of play, this exhibition moves beyond mere decadence by drawing upon memories of secret childhood experiences to expose the pathologies of a mass-media society.
