Mo Kim’s board game The White Cube offers participants an adventurous opportunity to test their luck in the Korean art world. The very moment you decide to take part in the game—that is, the moment the die in your hand is cast onto the flat game board—you become an artist.

Yet you should not assume that your fate is determined by the lucky (or unlucky) number produced as the die is thrown, rolls, and comes to a stop. The first roll, of course, may exceptionally allow for such a romantic sense of fate. As with the beginning of all things.

The game board across which the die rolls is already a structure in itself. The conditions for advancing to the next stage are subtly altered according to your starting point. Even so, this is a fair game, because the same die is cast on the same board. Now the choice is yours. Even under these constraints, are you willing to endure for the sake of the glory of art that may, someday, be bestowed upon you?
