《The SONGEUN Art Award Exhibition》, established in 2001 to discover and support talented contemporary Korean artists, is currently underway at SONGEUN.

Marking its twentieth anniversary in 2021, the SONGEUN Art Award relaxed its eligibility requirements to allow a broader range of emerging artists to apply and expanded the number of artists participating in the finalist exhibition to twenty.

A total of 503 artists applied for this year’s competition, and new works by the twenty artists selected through the preliminary round held last February are now on view.

The grand prize winner will be selected through a final evaluation conducted during the exhibition and announced later this month.

The twenty participating artists are Jaewook Koh, Youngle Keem, Hyun-Seok Kim, Eunjoo Rho, Grim Park, Grim Park, Yunju Park, Hye-Kyung Son, Sungseok Ahn, Anna Han, Jade Sujin Lee, Heejoon Lee, Jongwan Jang, Bokyung Jun, Hye-Rim Jun, Hye-Joo Jun, Jihyun Jung, Heemin Chung, Che Go Eun, and Wonhae Hwang.

Their works encompass a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, installation, photography, video, and sound, offering a view of the diverse practices shaping contemporary Korean art.

Since its establishment, the SONGEUN Art Award has placed particular emphasis on creating a transparent and impartial award system, operating through an open call and rigorous individual assessments by independent external jurors throughout the entire selection process.

To date, the award has recognized forty artists, many of whom have continued to build active careers through exhibitions and awards at prominent institutions in Korea and abroad.

The grand prize winner receives KRW 20 million and support for a solo exhibition at SONGEUN within two years of receiving the award.

With support from Cartier, two works by the winner are also acquired for the collections of the SONGEUN Art and Cultural Foundation and the Seoul Museum of Art. The winner is additionally offered a one-year residency at SeMA Nanji Residency, a residency program operated by the Seoul Museum of Art, to encourage the continued development of their artistic practice.

All twenty finalists are eligible to apply for the SONGEUN Art and Cultural Foundation–Delfina Foundation Residency, operated through an exclusive partnership with the Delfina Foundation, which runs London’s largest international residency program. One selected artist receives support for a three-month residency at the Delfina Foundation.

The SONGEUN Art Award was established in 2001 by Sang-Duck Yoo, Chairperson of the SONGEUN Art and Cultural Foundation, to honor the late SungYeon Yoo, founder and honorary chairperson of the foundation, and to carry forward his commitment to advancing Korean art and culture through public-interest initiatives.
