A special screening highlighting contemporary Korean media art was held at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

On May 30, the SONGEUN Art and Cultural Foundation presented 《VIDEO CLUB SONGEUN x STEDELIJK. Korean Video Art Today》 at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Organized to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the SONGEUN Art Award, the project featured a special screening and artist talk.

The event was based on the ongoing exchange between the SONGEUN Art and Cultural Foundation and the Stedelijk Museum since 2023. It was held as part of VIDEO CLUB, the Stedelijk Museum’s screening series dedicated to its time-based media collection.

Rein Wolf, director of the Stedelijk Museum, along with art professionals and visitors from the Netherlands, attended the event. Several participating artists were also present to discuss their works.

The screening introduced video works by six Korean artists. The program included An Jungju’s Their War 2 - Israel (2005) and Sojung Jun’s Despair to be Reborn (2020), which entered the Stedelijk Museum’s collection in 2023–2024, as well as four works newly confirmed for acquisition through the 2026–2027 program: Sungsil Ryu x eobchae’s CHERRY BOMB (2018), Oh Min’s Simultaneity, Lecture (2025), Seung Ae Lee’s The Wanderer I (2023), and Young-jun Tak’s Wohin? (2022).

The four newly acquired works were donated through a partnership with Bulgari. Bulgari collaborated by purchasing works by media artists who had participated in SONGEUN’s exhibition programs and donating them to the Stedelijk Museum. This initiative also aligns with Bulgari’s philanthropic commitment to supporting artists in Korea and abroad and preserving cultural heritage.

The screening demonstrated how video works by Korean artists are increasingly entering the collections of major museums overseas. The collaboration between the SONGEUN Art and Cultural Foundation and the Stedelijk Museum extends beyond a simple exchange program, contributing to the international presentation, acquisition, and circulation of Korean media art.

The screened works addressed contemporary social phenomena, history, human perception, and identity in distinct ways. An Jungju’s Their War 2 - Israel captures daily life in an Israeli conflict zone through a restrained yet sensorial visual language. Sojung Jun’s Despair to be Reborn experiments with the overlap between personal and historical time through poetic narrative and mise-en-scène.

Sungsil Ryu x eobchae’s CHERRY BOMB adopts the format of a single-person media broadcast to satirize an era in which even the horrors of war become content. Oh Min’s Simultaneity, Lecture embodies a central concept from the artist’s ongoing project examining how the human body perceives and consumes time.

Seung Ae Lee’s The Wanderer I visualizes invisible modes of existence through the burning of paper ritual objects, taking ssitkimgut as its central theme. Young-jun Tak’s Wohin? reflects on human life at the intersection of queer identity, religion, and layers of history.

Following the screening, an artist talk was moderated by Melanie Bühler, curator of contemporary art at the Stedelijk Museum, and Jo-Lene Ong, curator at BURO Stedelijk. An Jungju, Oh Min, Seung Ae Lee, and Young-jun Tak introduced their works directly to local audiences and participated in a question-and-answer session.

Meanwhile, the second edition of the collaborative program 《SONGEUN × Stedelijk: VIDEO CLUB》 is scheduled to take place at the SONGEUN Auditorium from the 9th to the 11th of this month. The program is curated by artist Becket MWN, a professor at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and operator of the critical platform Tangents.

Becket MWN has explored the complex interplay of voices that begin within the self and extend outward. Approaching the boundaries between language, body, and voice through the throat as a passageway, the program will examine the multiple voices and layers of sensation latent within a single body.
