Seung Ae Lee captures immaterial elements such as emotion, light, and sound, translating them into drawing, animation, and installation.

The artist combines everyday objects and spaces with abstract patterns and forms to construct surreal works that hover between reality and fiction.

Her animations, created by photographing drawings produced through repeated acts of erasing and redrawing and then sequencing the images, also serve as an alternative means of visualizing her imaginative realm.

Working primarily with graphite and paper, her practice can also be understood as an experiment in the infinite possibilities of familiar and modest materials.

The mural and animation project presented by the artist at this edition of the Gwangju Biennale draws inspiration from ssitkimgut, a Korean shamanic cleansing ritual performed to wash away the grief and sorrow of the deceased.

Rather than directly depicting scenes from ssitkimgut, however, the artist creates a mysterious atmosphere by rubbing everyday materials such as wood, stone, and soil onto paper, cutting out the resulting abstract fragments, and connecting them with drawings made on the wall.

The animation shown beside the mural transforms everyday objects into dreamlike imaginary beings against a backdrop of percussion and wind sounds, heightening a sense of the unknown.
