Young Korean artists working in France have every reason to be excited these days. An emerging artists exhibition organized by the Korean Cultural Center in France (Director: Mo Chul-min) has been serving as an important gateway for promising Korean artists in Paris, a city renowned for its culture and arts.

The Korean Cultural Center in France first launched its Emerging Artists Exhibition program in early 2004. The initiative was designed to actively support the creative activities of promising young artists working locally.

Curator Kim Ai-Ryung explained, “Although many students have studied art in France, a considerable number have been unable to continue on the path of becoming professional artists. We organized this exhibition to provide them with a first exhibition opportunity and help lay the foundation for their growth as professional artists.” Since the inaugural exhibition in October 2004, a total of fifteen exhibitions had been held by that time.

The advantages of the Emerging Artists Exhibition are numerous. For most participating artists, it represents their first solo exhibition. The exhibition space is provided free of charge, while the Cultural Center also covers catalog production and media promotion in both Korea and France. Thanks to these extensive promotional efforts, the exhibition attracted more than 10,000 visitors the previous year.

Positive reception often led to further invitations from other institutions and exhibition venues. Min Jungyeon, one of the artists featured in the very first Emerging Artists Exhibition, was subsequently invited to participate in the Overseas Young Artists Exhibition at the Seoul Arts Center and the opening exhibition of Galerie Mille Plateaux, a Korean gallery in Paris.

As word of the program spread, applications increased dramatically. In the previous year alone, more than one hundred applicants competed for nine available spots.

The selection committee included leading professionals such as the president of the French Association of Art Critics and art critics who contributed to Le Monde. Seon Woo-won (29), one of the artists selected for that month's exhibition, remarked, “Although I have studied in France for eight years and have been working as an artist for four years, this is my first solo exhibition. For Korean artists, this is an invaluable program.”
