Songeun Cultural Foundation will host 《The 23rd Songeun Art Award Exhibition》 from Wednesday, December 13, 2023, to Saturday, February 24, 2024.

The Songeun Art Award, established in 2001, is an annual award dedicated to discovering and supporting emerging contemporary Korean artists. Marking its 20th anniversary in 2021, the award underwent a restructuring. This year, a total of 512 artists applied, and following the preliminary screening held in February, 20 finalists were selected for the exhibition.

The 20 participating artists—Nam Jinwoo, Moon Isaac, Park Ungkyu, Park Hyungjin, Baek Kyungho, Baek Jongkwan, Shin Mijeong, Shin Jehyeon, Yoo Hwasoo, Lee Sejun, Lee Woosung, Lee Eunyoung, Im Nosik, Jang Pa, Jeon Jangyeon, Jung Seohui, Jung Jin, Heo Yeonhwa, Hwang Moonjung, and Hwang Seonjeong—will present new works spanning painting, sculpture, installation, video, and sound, offering a glimpse into the diverse landscape of contemporary Korean art.

In this exhibition, Yoo Hwasoo focuses on trees that were removed from residential areas for obstructing views. His work Gestures of Cultivation (2023), inspired by an ordinary event, examines the increasing desensitization toward nature and the environment in an era of technological and informational advancement. This piece raises the question: Who do we coexist with, and how? Addressing the discourse on coexistence, Yoo collects ecological data on inedible mushrooms growing on dead trees using smart farm technology—a cutting-edge system developed for human needs—reframing it as an act of maintenance and care.

In 2020, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the award and the opening of its new building, Songeun Cultural Foundation restructured the Songeun Art Award. Since 2021, the competition has maintained its exhibition-based evaluation while expanding the number of exhibiting artists to 20. Strengthening its commitment to fostering artistic talent, Songeun has partnered with the Seoul Museum of Art and Cartier, known for their dedication to sustainable cultural and artistic support, to significantly enhance the award’s benefits.

The Grand Prize winner of the 23rd Songeun Art Award will be determined during the exhibition period and announced in January 2024. The winner will receive:

- KRW 20 million in prize money
- A solo exhibition at Songeun within two years
- Two additional works purchased (valued at approximately KRW 30 million), one for Songeun Cultural Foundation's collection and one for the Seoul Museum of Art
- A one-year residency at the Nanji Art Studio, operated by the Seoul Museum of Art, supporting the artist's ongoing practice

Additionally, all 20 participating artists are eligible for the Songeun Cultural Foundation–Delfina Foundation Residency program, a partnership with Delfina Foundation in London. One selected artist will receive a fully supported 12-week residency at Delfina, one of London's largest international artist residency programs, which invites over 40 artists annually, providing them with a global art platform.

The exhibition is free to the public and open daily from 11 AM to 6:30 PM, excluding Sundays and public holidays, with no reservation required. Docent tours are available four times a day (11 AM, 2 PM, 3 PM, and 4 PM) through a reservation system on Naver.
